Dr. Sally A. Campbell is an environmental consultant and chemist whose professional life brings together advanced scientific training, industrial expertise, organizational leadership, and community service. Her work has focused on helping organizations understand complex environmental requirements and make informed decisions about air quality and regulatory compliance.
Dr. Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree in physical chemistry from Wellesley College in 1964 and a master’s degree in physical chemistry from Harvard University in 1969. She went on to earn a PhD in atmospheric and nuclear chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1977, establishing a foundation for work at the intersection of chemistry, atmospheric science, and industry. While working at Martin Marietta Corporation, she expanded her expertise beyond the laboratory by completing a second master’s degree in management and organizational development at Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School. She also became a certified environmental consultant through the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice.
In 1979, Dr. Campbell joined Martin Marietta Corporation (now part of Lockheed Martin) as Technical Director of Atmospheric Services. The role placed her scientific training in an applied industrial setting and helped shape a career devoted to environmental analysis, management, and problem-solving. In 1986, she founded S.A. Campbell Assoc., an environmental consulting firm that she continues to lead as president. Her consulting work specializes in air-quality analysis for industrial facilities across the United States, assisting clients with permitting challenges, regulatory compliance, and strategic planning while helping them address federal, state, and local air-pollution standards. Her services also include management training and the facilitation of long-range planning sessions.
Dr. Campbell has served as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University, a professor and toxicologist at Dartmouth College, and a professor at Federal City College. Her professional affiliations include the Air & Waste Management Association, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, ASTM International, the American Chemical Society, and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
Her professional distinctions include membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society and recognition as a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists. These honors accompany a career spanning scientific research, education, consulting, and organizational development.
Dr. Campbell attributes much of her motivation to her father, a lawyer, and her grandfather, a business professor, whose professional achievements and community involvement left a lasting impression. From 1984 to 1987, she provided organizational-development support to social-service agencies. She remains active in her local church and contributes to initiatives addressing social issues and racism, reflecting a continuing commitment to positive social change.
