Daniel J. Vasicek: Data Scientist, Engineer and Applied Mathematician at the Intersection of Disciplines

For more than five decades, Daniel J. Vasicek has worked at the intersection of engineering, applied mathematics, computer science and artificial intelligence. His career has spanned aerospace engineering, petroleum analysis, software development, optical research, education and information technology—fields united by his ability to translate complex scientific concepts into practical, usable systems.
Since 2012, Dr. Vasicek has served as a data scientist, applied mathematician, engineer, linguist and programmer at Access Innovations Inc. in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also played an important role in the company’s development, contributing technical expertise in algorithms, mathematical modeling, computer science and artificial intelligence. Initially joining the organization as a programmer, he applied advanced computational methods to problems involving information management and emerging technologies. Alongside his work at Access Innovations, Dr. Vasicek has maintained a longstanding consulting relationship with Harbert Engineering in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since 1986, he has advised on complex engineering matters involving algorithm development, gamma-ray spectroscopy and related technical disciplines. His ability to move fluidly between theoretical analysis and real-world implementation has remained a defining feature of his professional career.
Before joining Access Innovations, Dr. Vasicek worked as a contract senior software engineer for MCNA Dental, where his responsibilities included software design, data analysis, data mining and language theory. From 2003 to 2009, he held senior engineering roles with the Starfire Optical Range at Kirtland Air Force Base and Scientific Applications International Corporation. His work during this period further demonstrated the breadth of his expertise across engineering, computation and advanced scientific research.
Dr. Vasicek also brought his technical knowledge into the classroom. From 1999 to 2003, he served as an adjunct professor at Tulsa Community College, teaching engineering and computer science. Earlier, he taught five honors physics classes at Booker T. Washington High School through Tulsa Public Schools. Additional senior engineering appointments included positions with PCM Technical and Thales Training & Simulation Inc.
The longest chapter of Dr. Vasicek’s career was spent with Amoco Production Company, which was later acquired by British Petroleum. From 1973 to 1999, he contributed to engineering and scientific initiatives within the energy industry. Among his most consequential projects was an effort to preserve the knowledge of retiring employees. By interviewing experienced professionals and converting their institutional expertise into computer programs, Dr. Vasicek helped ensure that valuable technical knowledge remained accessible to future generations of employees.
His work in petroleum reserve estimation proved particularly influential. After observing that reservoir analysts frequently relied on inconsistent methods to estimate oil in place, Dr. Vasicek collaborated with many of the world’s major oil companies through the GOCAD—or Geologically Oriented Computer-Aided Design—project initiated by the University of Nancy in France. He developed an estimation method based on minimizing second differences weighted by the reciprocal of the square of the distance. The approach improved the reliability of reserve calculations, helped identify additional recoverable resources and supported more effective reservoir management.
Dr. Vasicek’s academic training reflects the interdisciplinary nature of his career. He earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering sciences and a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from Purdue University, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in aerospace engineering sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder. He also completed coursework in aeronautics and astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and further studies in computer science at Tulsa Community College.
A licensed professional engineer, Dr. Vasicek has continued expanding his knowledge throughout his career. His additional training includes coursework in artificial intelligence, robotic-car programming and active web-page design through Udacity, as well as advanced study in artificial intelligence through Stanford University. He is also a life member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Beyond his technical work, Dr. Vasicek has contributed to civic and professional initiatives. He has volunteered with the Voting Integrity Group at AS Earth and organized the BP Amoco Corporate Challenge Team for more than a decade beginning in 1986. He also remains active in a local hiking club.
Dr. Vasicek traces his passion for science to the age of nine, when he decided that he wanted to become a space scientist. Encouraged by his mother to learn independently, he spent countless hours studying scientific literature at the library. That early curiosity developed into a lifelong commitment to exploration, problem-solving and discovery.
Across industries and disciplines, Dr. Vasicek has built his career around a consistent principle: complex knowledge is most valuable when it can be transformed into something practical. Whether preserving institutional expertise, improving petroleum-reserve estimates, developing algorithms or educating future engineers, he has continually sought new ways to apply scientific reasoning to consequential real-world challenges.
