Justice Advocate Elena Vasquez: Reforming the Criminal Justice System

Elena Vasquez spent fifteen years as a public defender, representing clients who could not afford private counsel. What she witnessed in those years—the casual injustices, the systemic biases, the way poverty and race determined outcomes—drove her to seek change at a systemic level.

She now leads a nonprofit organization focused on criminal justice reform, working with legislators, judges, and community organizations to challenge practices that perpetuate inequality.

Her work has led to significant reforms: the elimination of cash bail in several jurisdictions, the expungement of records for thousands of people convicted of minor offenses, and new training programs for law enforcement focused on de-escalation and community engagement.

But she is clear that individual reforms, while important, are not enough. True justice requires a fundamental reimagining of how we respond to crime and harm in our communities.
