David M. Dressler, MD: Psychiatrist

Dr. Dressler is a licensed psychiatrist and a renowned Jungian analyst who offers individual psychotherapy to adults over the age of forty. He currently works from his Roxbury, Connecticut, home. He has over five decades of hands-on experience in Jungian psychology, psychotherapy, life coaching, clinical supervision, life transitions, spiritual guidance, and other areas.

Dr. Dressler had an epiphany in 1959 after beginning his higher education as a chemistry major and realizing he couldn’t see himself working as a chemist. He awoke one morning with the certainty that he would become a psychiatrist. He completed his medical training at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1964. Following graduation, he completed his internship at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center in 1965, followed by his psychiatry residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1968. He then completed his fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry before being invited to join the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry from 1969 to 1973, publishing 25 academic papers.

Dr. Dressler was appointed as the first Chief of Psychiatry at New Britain General Hospital in Connecticut, as well as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, in 1973. While there, he trained as a Certified Jungian Analyst in New York City before leaving the hospital in 1992 to open a private practice in Woodbury, Connecticut.

He is a member of the Connecticut Medical Society, the Connecticut Psychiatric Society, and the New York Association of Analytic Psychology, as well as being a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In addition to his accomplishments, he is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

Dr. Dressler believes in the importance of being in tune with the universe, as inspired by Carl Jung’s writings. Everything has always fallen into place for him, in his opinion. In 2019, he published “Guidelines for a Productive, Meaningful, and Fulfilling Life: Practical Wisdom Gained from 50 Years of Clinical Practice and 80 Years of Life Experience and Self-Reflection,” a pamphlet.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental illnesses. These include a variety of mood, behavior, cognition, and perception maladaptations. Psychiatrists assess, diagnose, and treat patients suffering from mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders. They perform thorough psychiatric evaluations, create treatment plans, prescribe medication, and assess treatment outcomes.
