Dr. Allan P. Gold: Understanding the Whole Child Through School Psychology and Community Service

For Dr. Allan P. Gold, education extends beyond the classroom. A child’s experience of school is shaped by relationships, family circumstances and the challenges carried into each day. His career in school psychology has centered on offering support within that broader picture. Dr. Gold began his role as school psychologist in the Reed Union School District in 1976. Located in Tiburon, California, the district has been the setting for his longstanding commitment to students and their well-being. His academic work also brought him to the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as an adjunct professor in the School of Education from 1980 to 1987.

Dr. Gold’s educational path began with mathematics and statistics. At the University of California, Berkeley, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, graduating summa cum laude, followed by a master’s degree in Statistics. During the Vietnam War era, he joined the United States Army Reserves and served in a medical unit as a Psychology and Social Work Specialist. That experience introduced a new direction to his professional life, prompting a shift toward psychology and social work.

He returned to his studies, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and, in 1978, a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at Berkeley. His journey connected a foundation in analytical thinking with a growing interest in people, development and the support children need.

Within school, Dr. Gold established groups for children coping with difficult family circumstances. These include divorce, illness in the family and the experience of having siblings with special needs. The groups provide an additional source of support as students navigate challenges that extend beyond their academic work.

His contributions have earned recognition from both professional organizations and his community. Reed Union School District presented him with its First Educator Award for Outstanding Educators. He also received the Outstanding School Psychologist award twice from the California Association of School Psychologists, along with a Rotary Club Award recognizing community service.

Dr. Gold has maintained affiliations with the National Association of School Psychologists and the California Association of School Psychologists. His service has also included leadership as president of his local synagogue. Since 2017, he has served as chair of the board of Being Adept, a nonprofit focused on educating middle school students and preventing alcohol and drug abuse. This work extends his commitment to young people into the community, emphasizing education and prevention.

Across school psychology, university teaching and nonprofit leadership, Dr. Gold’s career reflects a sustained concern for the lives of children. His story shows how a change in professional direction can develop into decades of service, with learning and personal support at the center.
